After an injury playing high school basketball cut his professional basketball aspirations short, Christopher “Detoxys” Doyle made the switch to the sticks in a way that has already paid off for him. The 22-year-old split $250K with his Still Trill teammates last year after winning the Road to the All-Star Game finals in New Orleans, a team of which all five starters made the NBA 2K League this year. Detoxys’ do-it-all statline during the NBA 2K League combine, including a quadruple-double performance, means he’ll carry his success on NBA 2K into the league come May. You can find all of Detoxys’ stats on NBA 2K Lab here. Detoxys recently announced he has been invited to the NBA 2K League draft at Madison Square Garden in New York on April 4.
DIMER caught up with Detoxys to ask him a few questions about his future in the NBA 2K League.
Where were you when you got the call that you made the league? What were you thinking and feeling as you answered the phone and realized that it was the NBA 2K League telling you that you had made it in?
As funny as it sounds, I was actually in the shower when I got the call. I kept my phone on ring all day in case I received the call while I was showering. I had been receiving calls throughout the day, sometimes it was my brother or my mother, and sometimes it was work. No matter who called throughout that day, I immediately jumped and ran to pick up the phone. So I am in the shower and I hear my phone ring. Initially, I am thinking to myself it’s probably my family calling for something. I then look down at the number and it is a New York number. I immediately answer and it is the NBA calling me letting me know that I made the NBA 2K League. I was so happy that I barely was listening to everything said to me at first. After deep thought, I realized that all my hard work had paid off and I then began asking questions. I had the league representative reiterate the things that I may have missed during the initial part of the call and was ready for the next part of the draft process.
What kind of emotions are you anticipating when you hear your name called on draft night?
When I hear my name called on draft night, several emotions will be triggered. Obviously, I am going to be excited and happy to join the organization that calls my name on April 4th. I may shed a few tears (hopefully I won’t) of joy. This is the start of a new road and everything that I have worked for in my life has led to this moment. Every game in real life or 2K will have helped me achieve this goal and I will realize that all the hours put into the game and in real life basketball were not all for nothing. In fact, they were all part of the path to pursuing my lifelong dream of making it to the NBA; but, that dream shifted to the NBA 2K League as soon as it was announced.
Who are some other players who made the draft pool that you would want to team up with in the NBA 2K League and why?
There are so many players that I have played with throughout my years of 2K and so many relationships that I have built. The list of players goes on and on of people of whom I would want to play alongside. To name a few of these players, I would love to be reunited with some of my Still Trill teammates. We accomplished something every 2K player dreams of, winning the $250,000 Road to the All-Star Game Tournament. My former teammates, Timelycook, Dimez, Kenny Got Work, and Swizurk will forever be my friends as we made history that day. All of us will never forget that life-changing week. To name even a few more deserving people that I would love to play with in the 2K League, I would look no further than my recent MPBA MIT Tourney Championship Old School teammates, Larry, Procis1on, and LYKaPRO. This was the last competitive 2K tournament that I played in and we won it all. I would relish the opportunity to play with any of them the 2K League. Also, my former Good Life teammates that almost made it to the Road to The Finals championship are also people that I would love to potentially team up with once again. JT, Hood, Shump, and Shotz were all part of that elite roster. I do not want anyone to feel as though they have been left out, so if I played with you before, chances are I want to get drafted with and play with you again. These are just the names that are my top of mind.
You split $250K with your teammates after winning the RTTASG finals in New Orleans last year. How do you think that kind of big-game experience is going to benefit you in the league?
I am one of 20 NBA 2K players that can say that they have competed on the biggest stage of NBA 2K in front of hundreds of thousands of viewers and one of the few competitors to have actually won. This experience should hopefully give me and the other top 102 members who have played on this level a major advantage while competing in the league for such high stakes. We have already experienced the nerves and emotions that go along with playing in a game of that magnitude. Other members of the top 102 NBA 2K players will have to experience that for themselves to truly understand the pressure.
What are your personal goals for the first season in the league? What are your personal long-term goals in the league and with NBA 2K?
My initial goal for the NBA 2K League is to develop a working relationship with my five other teammates. I want to make five new best friends and develop a chemistry that is unmatched by any other team. My main goal for the inaugural season of the NBA 2K League is to win a championship. Winning is really my biggest priority and what matters most to me. I always prided myself on winning before earning any personal achievements or accolades for my play. I also want to get in the best physical shape of my life as well as develop new healthy eating choices with the help of team trainers and nutritionists.
What kind of person and player would a team be getting if they drafted you?
If a team drafted me, they would be getting the most humble and unselfish 2K player there is, a true player you can build a team around and rely on in the clutch. As I already mentioned, the only thing that matters to me is winning. I am prepared to make the necessary sacrifices that my team needs from me in order to win. A team would also be getting a smart and intellectual individual who prides himself on truly understanding the 2K playing mechanics. I have always viewed myself as a strategist and the game of 2K just comes naturally to me, especially when developing strategies for playing against a talented opponent. A team would also be drafting an individual that would want to help give back to those less fortunate and be heavily involved in the local community. Doing the right thing is something I always strive to do and I just want to make the world a better place in any way, shape, or form I can.
